SEWERYN ZAPŁATYŃSKI

Seweryn Zapłatyński – Polish flutist, pedagogue, and chamber musician, born in Oława in Lower Silesia. A flutist with the National Philharmonic in Warsaw, he also holds a Doctor of Arts degree and serves as a lecturer at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music. He further develops his pedagogical activity as aflute teacher at ZPSM No. 1 in Warsaw. Regularly invited to lead masterclasses and workshops, as well as to serve on juries of flute competitions, he actively supports the development of the younger generation of musicians. He began learning the flute in his hometown at the Primary Music School in Oława in the class of Anna Szlichta, under whose guidance he continued his education at the Secondary Music School named after Ryszard Bukowski in Wrocław. He graduated from the Academy of Music in Łódź in the class of Prof. Urszula Janik-Lipińska, and also studied under Prof. Andrea Lieberknecht at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hanover. During his artistic education, he gained knowledge from many outstanding flutists and pedagogues, including Peter-Lukas Graf, Philippe Bernold, Jean-Claude Gérard, Gaby Pas-Van Riet, and János Bálint.
In 2007–2008, he was a flutist with the Witold Lutosławski Philharmonic in Wrocław. Since 2008, he has been associated with the National Philharmonic Orchestra in Warsaw, with which he has undertaken numerous artistic tours, performing in major cultural centers across Europe, the United States, Japan, China, and South Korea. As a soloist, he has performed with the National Philharmonic Orchestra, the National Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra, and the philharmonic orchestras of Katowice, Koszalin, Łódź, and Kalisz. As an orchestral musician, he has collaborated with many ensembles, including Sinfonia Varsovia, the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra (NOSPR), the Polish Radio Orchestra in Warsaw, the Łódź Philharmonic, the Kyiv Symphony Orchestra, and Sinfonia Viva. Chamber music holds a special place in his artistic activity. He has performed with numerous musicians inensembles ranging from duos and trios to quartets, quintets, and larger formations. He is a co-founder of the Quintessence wind quintet, with which he performs at festivals, in Polish philharmonic halls, and atcultural events. He is a laureate of numerous auditions and music competitions.

 Among Seweryn Zapłatyński’s most significant international achievements are:

– First Prize and special awards at the 3rd Michał Spisak International Music Competition in Dąbrowa Górnicza (2009),

– Third Prize at the 15th Friedrich Kuhlau International Flute Competition in Uelzen (2013) in the flute trio category,

– Second Prize (with no First Prize awarded) and multiple distinctions (including for the best performanceof the competition’s patron’s work) at the 8th Henri Tomasi International Wind Quintet Competition inMarseille (2015),

– Third Prize and special awards in the form of concert engagements at the 3rd International Competitionof Polish Music in Rzeszów (2023), awarded as a flutist of the Quintessence quintet.
